Echoes of Aincrad — Sanctuary Trials & Final Trial

Past Floor 2, Aincrad's story collapses into a chain of sealed Sanctuary trials, each opened by an Ark boss, that leads to the Final Trial, the Sacred Mountain Temple, and Red Mordred — the true final boss. Here is every Sanctuary, the three Final Trial Arks, and the full Red Mordred strategy.

Late-Game · Story Climax

The Sanctuary trials gate Aincrad's ancient weapons and the road to the Sacred Mountain Temple.

What Is a Sanctuary?

Sanctuaries are special late-game dungeon trials bound to the floating castle's ancient weapons. Each is locked behind an Ark — a sealed gate that only opens after you defeat the boss lurking inside it. On the overworld, Arks usually unlock optional paths and treasure chests; during the Final Trial they become mandatory story gates. Clearing a Sanctuary typically grants a Legendary Weapon and pushes the main quest forward. Run them in order — the later trials and the Temple depend on the chain being complete.

The Four Sanctuary Trials

First Sanctuary

Lv 14–18

The first major trial sits at the end of the Floor 2 labyrinth. Its boss, the Tyrant Golem, has three phases and a wide arsenal of AOE attacks. Stay close to its legs to avoid the lasers, and clearing the trial reveals the location of the Second Sanctuary.

Reward: Legendary One-Handed Sword

Que's Sanctuary

Lv ~18

One of the Floor 2 Sanctuary quests on the road to Taran. Like the others it is gated behind an Ark boss and feeds directly into the next story beat, keeping the Sanctuary chain moving forward rather than letting you treat any one trial as optional cleanup.

Reward: Ancient weapon trial + story gate

Cati's Sanctuary

Lv ~18–22

The party raids Cati's Sanctuary to retrieve a Legendary Weapon, but Arne seizes it first — and you learn Cal has already passed away (their name is on the Monument of Life). This failure pushes Iori to connect the Sanctuaries to the Elven Ruins you explored in the Beta.

Reward: Legendary Weapon (briefly)

Volor's Sanctuary

Lv high / post-Taran

The last of the four Sanctuary trials, faced late in the climb toward the Founding of the Order. Its boss, White Morrigan, caps the Sanctuary arc before the Final Trial seals open the route to the Sacred Mountain Temple.

Reward: White Morrigan trial

The Final Trial — Route to the Temple

The Final Trial (main quest 31) begins after Cati's Sanctuary. You'll chase the Elven Ruins from the Beta, then clear three sealed Arks before the Sacred Mountain Temple opens. The Arks can be done in any order — but the Temple seal only breaks once all three are defeated, so don't treat any single Ark as the finish line.

1Finish Cati's Sanctuary, then return to the Town of Beginnings and read Cal's name on the Monument of Life. Iori connects the Sanctuaries to the Elven Ruins you cleared in the Beta.
2Accept the Final Trial quest at the Terminal. You'll be sent back toward Horunka and onward to the quest location — the route winds through the Northern Plains and the Sacred Mountain Highway.
3Clear the three sealed Arks in any order: Wobbling Araba (southeast of the resting point), Trembling Dondo (near the Ephemeral Path warp), and Cunning Sasaki (south of the Illusory Path warp).
4With all three Arks defeated, the seal at the Sacred Mountain Temple breaks. Fight through the elite enemies inside and reach the boss arena.
5Face Red Mordred. Save potions and Healing Crystals for the boss itself — clear the pre-Temple elites with Sword Skills, not consumables.

The Three Final Trial Arks

Ark 1 — Wobbling ArabaBug-type boss

Southeast of the resting point, near the sealed entrance. Wobbling Araba summons lesser bug-type enemies during the fight. After you clear its first phase, Musoh joins your party to help finish Phase 2.

Ark 2 — Trembling DondoOx-type boss

Found by unlocking the Sacred Mountain of Lulue: Ephemeral Path warp point and taking the northwest path to a U-turn. Trembling Dondo summons lesser Ox-type enemies; Stina joins you for Phase 2 after the first phase falls.

Ark 3 — Cunning SasakiMountain spirit boss

South of the Sacred Mountain of Lulue: Illusory Path warp point, then right at the split. Cunning Sasaki summons lesser mountain spirits and uses ranged projectile attacks, but otherwise poses little threat. Zash joins for Phase 2 after the first phase.

Red Mordred — The True Final Boss

At the end of the Final Trial, inside the Sacred Mountain Temple, you face Red Mordred — a fire-type bear and one of the hardest fights in the game. It lays burning ground, summons bear-type elites, and lunges across the arena. Crucially, you cannot apply Burning to it, so plan your item loadout around Numbing and Poison instead.

Phase 1Learn the Burn

Red Mordred is a bear-type enemy built around fire. It lobs fireballs and breathes fire across the ground, leaving burning patches that linger for a few seconds. Avoid stepping on the burning ground and keep your healing items ready — fire is its main pressure tool.

Phase 2Blindside + Add

In the second phase the boss summons another bear-type elite that can inflict Blindness, and Red Mordred becomes more aggressive. Defeat the summoned elite first so you can focus cleanly on the boss without losing sight of its tells.

Phase 3Double Trouble

The final phase summons two bear-type elites and turns Red Mordred into a relentless lunging threat that crashes from one end of the arena to the other. Burn down the adds, save a Numbing Mine for a stun window, and only commit Sword Skills during confirmed recovery.

Before the Sacred Mountain Temple — Loadout

Healing Potions

Essential. Red Mordred's fire and the two summoned elites will chew through your bar — never enter the Temple low on healing.

Numbing Mine

The single best item for the boss. Drop it directly on Red Mordred to stun it temporarily and open a heavy damage window.

Poisoned Stones / Mines

Red Mordred is immune to Burning, so Poison is your reliable damage-over-time ailment. Flame items simply will not land.

Expand Healing Crystals

Side Quests that raise your Healing Crystal cap pay off here. More crystals means more emergency heals during the long Phase 3.

Rest at a Safe Area first

Once you enter the Final Trial you get one shot at the Temple with no resupply. Fully heal and top off at a Safe Area before the boss doors.

Lower difficulty if stuck

If the boss chain keeps wiping you, drop the difficulty while in a town. The story still completes — pride is not worth a reset.

Biggest Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to apply Burning to Red Mordred — it is immune, so flame items are dead weight in the Temple.
  • Treating one completed Ark as permission to skip the others — the Temple seal only breaks once all three are done.
  • Spending all your Healing Crystals on the pre-boss elites — you get no resupply before Red Mordred.
  • Entering the First Sanctuary under-leveled — the boss leaves almost no room to recover from missed dodges.
  • Abandoning the Sanctuary chain to fully clear the Second Floor — the efficient route is to finish the active trial, take the unlock, and move on.
  • Forgetting to expand Healing Crystals via Side Quests before the finale.

Past the Temple, the Order Awaits

The Sanctuary chain is the spine of the late game. Sort your build, stock your consumables, and know the boss lineup before you commit to the Final Trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Sanctuary trials in Echoes of Aincrad?

Special late-game dungeon trials tied to Aincrad's ancient weapons. Each is sealed behind an Ark boss; defeating it opens the gate and (usually) grants a Legendary Weapon while advancing the story toward the Final Trial.

Who is the final boss of Echoes of Aincrad?

The true final boss is Red Mordred, a fire-type bear at the Sacred Mountain Temple. Three phases, burning ground, summoned bear elites, and immunity to Burning — bring Numbing and Poison items instead of flames.

What level should I be for the Sanctuary trials?

About Level 14–18 for the First Sanctuary, 18–22 by the Second Sanctuary and Taran, and higher still for the later Sanctuaries and Final Trial. The bosses give little room to recover, so arrive with a buffer.

Why can't I burn Red Mordred?

Red Mordred is intrinsically immune to the Burning status, so fire attacks and flame items do nothing. Use Numbing Mines for a stun window and Poisoned Stones/Mines for a damage-over-time ailment that actually lands.
