From Illfang the Kobold Lord to the Sentry Golem — master the bosses that gate your climb through Aincrad.
How Bosses Work in Aincrad
Floor Boss
The climax of each floor's main quest. Defeating it advances the story and unlocks the path upward. The Floor 1 Boss is Illfang the Kobold Lord.
Labyrinth Guardian
A separate boss inside the floor's labyrinth that gates full floor completion. The Floor 1 Guardian is the Sentry Golem. Clear both to fully conquer a floor.
Confirmed Launch Bosses
| Boss | Role | Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illfang the Kobold Lord | Floor 1 Boss | Hard | The first true skill check. Three phases with summons and a finisher mechanic. |
| Sentry Golem | Floor 1 Labyrinth Guardian | Medium | Slow but powerful construct that teaches proper boss positioning. |
Illfang the Kobold Lord
The hardest boss of the early game and the first true skill check. Three phases, summoned adds, and a unique finisher mechanic that punishes players who only deplete his health bar.
Attack Patterns
- ·360° Ground Sweep — covers full rotation, punishable after the swing
- ·Charged Roar — forces you and your partner into a blocking stance, also summons fodder enemies
Strategy
- 1.Phases 1–2: Deplete HP while managing summoned adds — clear them quickly to avoid being overwhelmed.
- 2.Phase 3 (final): Illfang stops summoning adds but attacks more aggressively.
- 3.Finisher mechanic: After depleting his HP bar, it regenerates unless you perform a finisher.
- 4.Stand in front of or beside Illfang and press the heavy attack button to execute a finisher.
- 5.The finisher must be performed three times to permanently defeat him.
- 6.Save SP and Sword Skills for Phase 3 — the final phase demands maximum burst damage.
Preparation
Fully upgrade your weapon at the Smithy before this fight. Stock at least 5 Healing Crystals. Consider using Switch Mode to split aggro during add phases.
Sentry Golem
A slow but powerful construct that serves as your introduction to proper boss positioning. All of its attacks are forward-facing, so the fight is about where you stand.
Attack Patterns
- ·Stomp — repeatable close-range attack while you are nearby
- ·Ground Sweep — wide-radius attack that can stagger you
Strategy
- 1.Stay behind the Sentry Golem at all times — its attacks are all forward-facing.
- 2.Use charged heavy attacks from behind for maximum damage.
- 3.Parry the ground sweep and follow up with your partner's charged thrust attack.
- 4.Do not panic-dodge — the boss is slow, so timed sidesteps are more stamina-efficient.
Preparation
Practice parrying on fodder enemies before this fight. The Sentry Golem is forgiving but teaches fundamentals you will need for every later boss.
Universal Boss Framework
Parry & Reversal
Parrying costs no stamina and opens bosses to Reversal Slash counters. Every boss telegraphs its heavy swing — practice the timing on fodder enemies between floors. This is the highest-impact skill you can learn for any boss.
Charged Heavy
After a parry or a confirmed tell, a charged heavy attack deals burst damage and commonly triggers a stagger. Against slow bosses like the Sentry Golem, attack from behind with charged heavies to maximize uptime.
Phases & Tells
Most bosses change behavior at HP thresholds. Illfang, for example, stops summoning adds in his final phase but attacks far more aggressively. Watch the wind-ups — Sonic Scream-style AoE attacks are always preceded by a visible tell you can block or dodge.
Partner Synergy
Your AI partner is not just damage — in Switch Mode they can tank aggro so you heal or reposition, and in Free Mode they stack damage on a single target. Bring the partner whose kit matches the boss (e.g., a thrust-focused partner to punish the Golem's ground sweep).
Switch & Free Mode
Toggle mid-fight. Switch Mode splits pressure and protects you during recovery; Free Mode concentrates burst on the boss. Use Switch Mode to survive add phases, Free Mode to burn the final health bar.
Stamina & Spacing
Keep a stamina reserve for emergency dodges and a SP reserve for Sword Skills. Never fully drain either — panic-dodging a slow boss is less efficient than a timed sidestep. Spacing is how you create your own punish windows.
⚠️ Bosses in Death Game Mode
In Death Game Mode, bosses deal significantly more damage and the safety net is gone. Checkpoints between attempts are removed, and dying to a boss means your save is deleted — not a respawn. The same parry-and-punish fundamentals apply, but resource management, partner survivability, and pre-fight preparation become critical. Know your exit before you cross the boss door.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the hardest boss early in Echoes of Aincrad?
Illfang the Kobold Lord is widely considered the hardest encounter of the early game. His three phases, summons, and finisher mechanic make him a significant skill gate for new players.
Can I leave a boss room once the fight starts?
No. Once you cross the boss door, you are committed. This is why the preparation checklist before each encounter is critical — there is no backing out.
Which weapon is best against bosses?
Sword and Shield is the safest choice for new players — it provides blocking and balanced offense. For experienced players, Rapier offers speed and shield compatibility. Always upgrade your weapon at the Smithy before a major boss fight.
