Unique MODs Explained
Every weapon, every armor slot and every shield in Aincrad ships with a Unique MOD — a named passive welded to the item that you can never change, remove or reroll. Some of them are build-defining. A surprising number of them are outright downgrades. This page lists what each one actually does, which ones are traps, and how the Unique MOD layer sits on top of the randomized craft roll and your four EX-Mod slots.

The equipment panel shows a Unique MOD, a randomized bonus and four EX-Mod slots. Only two of those three are yours to control.
Unique MOD vs Bonus Effect vs EX-Mod
The game calls three different things “mods” and never clearly separates them. This is the single most common source of gear confusion in Echoes of Aincrad, so pin it down before reading any list below.
Unique MOD
FixedThe named passive printed on the item. Baked in at design time, identical on every copy, impossible to change. This is the layer that decides what a piece of gear is for.
Example: Saint's Armor → Auto-Recovery
Randomized Bonus
RerollableRolled the moment the Smithy forges the item. Two identical blueprints crafted back to back can produce different bonuses — this is why material farming matters for endgame gear.
Example: Same blueprint, two different rolls
EX-Mods
Player-slottedFour slots you fill yourself through weapon synthesis. Fully under your control, re-fusable at any time, and the layer you use to patch whatever your Unique MOD is bad at.
Example: Attack +35, Stamina +35, Sword Skill Damage
The Trap MODs — Read Before You Equip
Not every Unique MOD is a bonus. Six of them are net negatives, and because the equipment screen sorts by DEF and ATK rather than by MOD quality, it is very easy to upgrade yourself into a worse character.
| MOD | Gear | What It Does | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavyweight | Annealed Sledgehammer | Reduces normal attack speed | A straight nerf on a weapon class that is already slow. Only defensible if your entire kit runs on Sword Skills rather than light-attack chains. |
| Fast Master | Iron Tooth (Dagger) | Increases normal attack speed, but makes it impossible to guard | The single riskiest MOD in the game. Viable on a pure dodge build, suicidal in Death Game Mode where one mistimed roll ends the save file. |
| Weight of the Dodge | Guardian Jacket | Reduces the invincibility window of dodging | Shrinks the i-frames your survival depends on. The DEF on the jacket does not compensate — pair it with a shield build or skip it. |
| Isolation | Iron Hatchet | Reduces Support SP gains | Starves the resource your partner interactions run on. Actively hostile to Switch Mode play. |
| Stamina Recession | Wild Edge | Reduces maximum stamina | Less stamina means fewer dodges, guards and sprints. A prologue-tier weapon you should replace at the first opportunity. |
| Scrap Shield | Scrap Shield | Increases ATK, but also increases damage taken | A shield that makes you squishier is a contradiction. Only for speedrun-style aggression on Normal difficulty. |
All Weapon Unique MODs
Grouped by weapon type, with the quest or source that unlocks each blueprint. Weapon MODs trend toward offence and resource generation — the recurring themes are Sword Skill cooldowns, SP refunds, and bonus damage tied to a specific action such as a dodge, a parry or a Crush Attack.

Armor Unique MODs by Slot
Chest pieces carry the survivability MODs, gloves carry the Sword Skill economy MODs, and legs and boots carry the movement MODs. Because you fill four armor slots at once, this is where most of your passive budget actually lives — a well-chosen armor set changes a run more than a weapon swap does.
| Armor | Slot | Unique MOD | Effect | Source |

Shield Unique MODs
Only the One-Handed Sword, Rapier and Mace can equip a shield, and unlike other armor a shield provides no base DEF value of its own — its entire contribution is the Unique MOD. That makes shield choice a pure MOD decision, and it is the one slot where picking wrong costs you nothing but picking right can transform a fight.
| Shield | Unique MOD | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Round Shield | Parry Amplifier | Boosts Parry Slash damage and grants temporary DEF after one lands |
| Wood Shield | Light Guard | Reduces the stamina cost of guarding |
| Foresight Shield | Parry Mend | Restores HP on a successful Parry |
| Veil Shield | SP Bastion | Restores SP on guard; Sword Skills hit harder while SP is above half |
| Heart and Soul | Last Stand | Reduces damage taken while HP is at 50% or lower |
| Ohg's Hatred | Provoking Guard | Pulls nearby enemy attention on a successful guard and grants brief invincibility |
| Dark Xerxes | Thorned Guard | Reflects DEF-scaled damage back at the attacker on a successful guard |
| Saints Mirror | Dazing Guard | Applies daze stacks to the attacker for each successful guard |
| Gordian Shield | Bulwark | Increases DEF, but raises the stamina cost of dodging |
| Scrap Shield | Reckless Edge | Increases ATK, but also increases damage taken |
| Proto-Elucidator SH | Guard Charge | Restores SP after guarding an attack |
Best Unique MOD Combinations by Build
Unique MODs are strongest when several of them fire off the same input. Pick a trigger — dodge, parry, Crush Attack, Sword Skill — and then choose gear whose passives all key off it. Here are five combinations that hold together.
Beginner / Death Game Survival
Saint's Armor (Auto-Recovery) · Round Shield (Parry Amplifier) · Steel Sword (Slash Recovery)
Every piece here refunds a resource. Auto-Recovery reduces Healing Crystal burn, Parry Amplifier turns defence into damage, and Slash Recovery keeps SP topped up so you are never stuck holding a skill you cannot pay for. This is the loadout that survives a permadeath run.
Sword Skill Nuker
Ragefang Gauntlets (Power Sword) · Anneal Longsword (Sword Concept) · Sleek Gloves alternative (Reduced Activation)
Power Sword raises Sword Skill damage at the cost of SP, and Sword Concept cuts cooldowns whenever a skill connects. The SP tax is real — either run Sleek Gloves instead of Ragefang while you learn the fight, or patch it with Stamina Reduction EX-Mods.
Break & Knockdown
Daring Armguards (Crush Master) · Bastard Sword (Crush Surge) · Steel Axe (Downed Attack)
Crush Master raises Crush Attack damage, Crush Surge empowers whatever you throw immediately after, and Downed Attack cashes in the knockdown. Stack all three and the Break Marker stops being a wall — it becomes your damage window.
Dodge Assassin
Wind Fleuret (Vengeful Dodges) · Nightstalkers (Smoke Veil) · Journey Pants (Dodge Guard)
Three MODs that all trigger off the same button. Vengeful Dodges widens the i-frames and adds damage, Smoke Veil blinds everything around a perfect dodge, and Dodge Guard hands you DEF and status resistance on the way out. Never pair this with Weight of the Dodge.
Partner Synergy
Annealed Rod (Fellowship) · Steel Hammer (Vertigo Attack) · Ohg's Hatred (Provoking Guard)
Fellowship and Vertigo Attack both feed Support and Combo SP, which is the currency Switch Mode and combo finishers run on. Provoking Guard lets you hold aggro deliberately instead of accidentally. Avoid Isolation on any piece in this build.
Rerolling the Randomized Bonus
You cannot change a Unique MOD, but you can change the bonus effect rolled when the Smithy forges the item. Crafting the same blueprint twice produces two different secondary rolls, which means a piece you intend to carry across several floors is worth forging repeatedly.
- 1.Pick the Unique MOD you want first — that decides the blueprint, and it is the part you cannot influence.
- 2.Beeline every Safe Area in the region before hunting the blueprint. Activating a Safe Area reveals all chests and Seals on the map.
- 3.Stock the access tools the chest requires: Bomb Stones and Flame Stones for blocked paths, a Blinking Talisman for gap jumps, and an Ark clear for any sealed route.
- 4.Farm the material stack in bulk. Re-forging is gated by materials and Col, not by any cooldown — Tempered Steel and Rare Cloth Scrap are the usual bottlenecks.
- 5.Forge, read the bonus line, and forge again if it is not the one you want. The Unique MOD is identical every time.
- 6.Stop rerolling once the piece is a floor or two from being replaced. Save the materials for the gear that will carry you into the post-game instead.
Six Mistakes That Waste a Unique MOD
| Mistake | Why It Happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Equipping the higher-DEF piece automatically | Several high-DEF items carry actively harmful Unique MODs — Guardian Jacket trades i-frames for armour | Read the MOD line before the DEF number. A 10 DEF piece with the right passive beats a 15 DEF piece that shortens your dodge. |
| Confusing Unique MODs with EX-Mods | Both are called 'mods' in-game and both appear on the same equipment panel | Unique MOD = fixed, named, one per item, cannot be changed. EX-Mods = four player-filled synthesis slots. Plan the Unique MOD first, then patch its weakness with EX-Mods. |
| Crafting a blueprint once and moving on | The bonus effect on crafted gear is randomized per forge, not fixed | If a piece is going to carry you for several floors, farm the materials and re-forge it a few times. The Unique MOD stays, the secondary roll improves. |
| Running Fast Master in Death Game Mode | It removes your ability to guard entirely in a mode where a single death deletes the save | Keep Fast Master for standard-difficulty dagger runs. In permadeath, the guard button is worth more than the attack speed. |
| Stacking two MODs that fight each other | Wind Fleuret's Vengeful Dodges and the Guardian Jacket's Weight of the Dodge modify the same invincibility window in opposite directions | Group your MODs by trigger — dodge, parry, Crush, Sword Skill — and make sure everything in a build fires off the same action. |
| Ignoring Support SP MODs because the number looks small | Support and Combo SP drive partner interactions and combo finishers, not raw damage | Fellowship and Vertigo Attack quietly raise your total output more than a flat ATK line, because they let the partner act more often. |
Build Around the MOD, Not the Stat Line
The Unique MOD decides what a piece of gear is for. EX-Mods decide how well it covers its own weakness.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Unique MOD?
A named passive permanently attached to a specific piece of gear. Every weapon, armor slot and shield has exactly one and it never changes — Steel Sword is always Slash Recovery, Saint's Armor is always Auto-Recovery. Choosing the item is choosing the MOD.
How is it different from an EX-Mod?
EX-Mods are the four synthesis slots you fill yourself at the Smithy and can re-fuse at will. The Unique MOD is fixed. A third layer — the randomized bonus effect — is rolled when the item is forged, which is why the same blueprint can produce different results.
Which Unique MODs should I avoid?
Heavyweight (slower attacks), Weight of the Dodge (shorter i-frames), Isolation (less Support SP), Stamina Recession (lower max stamina), Scrap Shield (more damage taken) and Fast Master (cannot guard at all). Fast Master in particular should never be worn in Death Game Mode.
Can I reroll a Unique MOD?
No — only the randomized bonus effect rerolls. Farm materials and re-forge the same blueprint to chase a better secondary line; the Unique MOD comes out identical every time.
What is the best early Unique MOD?
Auto-Recovery on Saint's Armor. Grab the blueprint during Cliffside Marvel on Floor 2, craft it for 1,500 Col plus a Selenite Ingot, three Rare Cloth Scrap and two Red Core, and you get a 25 DEF chest that heals you passively when most gear at that stage sits at 15 DEF.
Do shields have Unique MODs too?
Yes, and it is all they have — shields grant no base DEF, so the MOD is the entire item. Only One-Handed Swords, Rapiers and Maces can equip one, which is a hidden argument in favour of those three weapon types.
Are Unique MODs the same as PC mods?
No. A Unique MOD is the gear passive covered on this page; a PC mod is a community file installed into the Steam build through UE4SS. Both exist in Echoes of Aincrad, so the word mods points at two separate systems — only the gear version is covered here.
