Echoes of Aincrad — Armor Guide
Weapons get all the attention, but by the time enemies start hitting for half your HP bar, your armor decides whether you live. This guide covers all four equipment slots, the best armor sets to craft first (including the Saint's Armor everyone is farming), which weapons can actually use a shield, and every Unique MOD worth building around.

Armor is replacement-based in Echoes of Aincrad — no upgrades, just stronger blueprints every floor.
How Armor Works
Armor is your only meaningful source of Defense — you can't buy DEF through attribute points the way you scale attack. Every piece also carries a Unique MOD, a fixed passive that ranges from lifesaving (Auto-Recovery) to build-defining (Sword Skill damage, SP cost reduction).
The critical difference from weapons: armor cannot be upgraded. Its stats are locked at creation. Progression means unlocking new blueprints as you climb floors, crafting at the Smithy, and replacing old pieces — so never sink rare materials into "saving up" for armor the way you would for a weapon.
Every Armor Slot Explained
Tops
Chest armor — usually the single biggest DEF boost of any slot.
Tip: Swap immediately when a stronger Top drops unless your current MOD is build-defining.
Gloves
Smaller DEF gains but the best attack-oriented Unique MODs (attack speed, Slash damage, SP costs).
Tip: Pick gloves by MOD, not DEF — the stat difference is tiny, the MOD difference is not.
Pants
Rounds out survivability; several pieces carry mobility MODs like AGI or Sprint Attack damage.
Tip: Small upgrades compound — a few DEF here matters in long boss fights.
Shields
Not just DEF: shields unlock directional blocking, parries, and counterattacks.
Tip: Only One-Handed Swords, Rapiers, and Maces can equip one.
Best Armor Sets to Craft First
Ranked by how much they change your run, not just raw DEF. Saint's Armor is the community consensus pick — grab its blueprint the moment you reach Floor 2.
Saint's Armor
TopDEF 25Unique MOD: Auto-Recovery — passively restores a portion of damage taken over time; healing speeds up below an HP threshold.
How to get: Blueprint from a glowing chest on Floor 2 near the Labyrinth (Cliffside Marvel). Craft for 1,500 Col + 1 Selenite Ingot, 3 Rare Cloth Scrap, 2 Red Core.
The best early-game Top in the game. Uncapped passive healing dramatically cuts Healing Crystal usage.
Earthly Jacket
TopDEF 20Unique MOD: Raises DEF near elite enemies and bosses, and reduces damage taken from them.
How to get: Early blueprint — check the Smithy on Floor 1–2.
The boss-fight specialist. Pairs beautifully with tank and parry-focused builds.
Guardian Jacket
TopDEF 30Unique MOD: Reduces the invincibility window of dodging (trade-off for the highest early DEF).
How to get: Blueprint reward from the Lord of the Plains side-quest chain.
Best raw DEF for shield users who block instead of dodge. Avoid on dodge-reliant builds.
Thirteen Ordeals
TopUnique MOD: HP regeneration up to a set HP threshold.
How to get: Blueprint from The Lost Log side quest (Elfa Mountain Maze trinket, defeat the Flowering Nepenthes).
Solid sustain, but capped healing makes it strictly worse than Saint's Armor once you have both.
Ragefang Gauntlets
GlovesDEF 10Unique MOD: Increases Sword Skill damage but raises SP consumption.
How to get: Blueprint from Depiction of the Divine (defeat the Shrewman Queen).
The DPS glove — best on burst builds that bank SP between skill windows.
Sleek Gloves
GlovesDEF 10Unique MOD: Reduces the SP required to activate Sword Skills.
How to get: Smithy blueprint as you progress Floor 2.
The sustained-DPS alternative: more skill casts per fight beats bigger single hits on long bosses.
Night Steel Gauntlets
GlovesDEF 10Unique MOD: Temporarily boosts normal attack speed when HP is recovered.
How to get: Smithy blueprint, mid Floor 2.
Synergizes with Saint's Armor's constant healing ticks for near-permanent uptime.
Ranger Boots
PantsDEF 10Unique MOD: Increases AGI.
How to get: Blueprint learned during the Summons main quest.
Default pick for Dexterity and Rapier builds.
Adventurer's Boots
PantsDEF 10Unique MOD: Increases Sprint Attack damage.
How to get: Smithy blueprint.
Fun on hit-and-run dagger builds that open every engagement with a sprint attack.
Round Shield
ShieldUnique MOD: Increases Parry Slash damage and grants a temporary DEF boost after each parry.
How to get: Early Smithy craft.
The parry-loop shield — every successful parry makes the next one safer.
Early Armor Reference (Floor 1–2)
The workhorse pieces you'll craft before the standout sets above unlock. Pick by Unique MOD — the DEF spread is small.
Reduces damage taken; stronger with a shield equipped.
Boosts Healing Crystal recovery; using one temporarily raises DEF.
Increases maximum HP.
Reduces susceptibility to status effects.
Increases normal attack speed.
Boosts Slash damage and makes Slashes easier to trigger.
Reduces stamina consumption of attacks.
Boosts Slash damage and activation.
Increases Support SP pool.
Shields: Which Weapons Can Use Them
A shield isn't a stat stick — it unlocks directional blocking, parries, and counterattacks that bare hands and two-handers never get. Exactly three weapon types can equip one:
One-Handed Sword
The classic sword-and-board loop. Best all-round pick for Dexterity characters — parry windows plus strong Sword Skill coverage.
Rapier
Chain fast combos while keeping directional blocking. Ideal for high-Agility characters who want safety without losing tempo.
Mace
The Strength option — heaviest one-handed damage in the game, brutal guard-gauge pressure, and the backbone of tank builds in Death Game Mode.
Two-Handed Swords, Two-Handed Axes, and Daggers cannot equip shields — those builds should compensate with dodge-window and damage-reduction MODs instead.
Armor Tips That Save Runs
- ◆Armor cannot be upgraded — never hoard materials 'for later'. Craft the best current blueprint and replace it next floor.
- ◆Open your equipment Chest after every story chapter: story rewards and crafted gear pile up unequipped, and it's easy to fight two floors in outdated armor.
- ◆Match your Top's MOD to your build's weakness: sustain (Saint's) for glass-cannon builds, boss mitigation (Earthly) for tanks, raw DEF (Guardian) for shield users.
- ◆Gloves and Pants MODs are effectively free build slots — treat them like extra EX-Mods rather than stat sticks.
- ◆Two-handed weapons and daggers can never equip shields — if you main those, dump the DEF loss into dodge-oriented MODs instead.
- ◆Ver. 1.0.3 rebalanced unique MODs on armor and shields, so pre-launch tier advice is outdated — the values on this page reflect the post-patch state.
Complete Your Loadout
Armor keeps you alive — the blueprints, weapon EX-Mods, and build synergy do the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can armor be upgraded like weapons?
No — armor stats and MODs are fixed at creation. Replace pieces as new blueprints unlock instead of investing materials in old gear.
Where do I get the Saint's Armor blueprint?
Floor 2, in a glowing chest near the Labyrinth during the Cliffside Marvel mission. Craft it at any Smithy for 1,500 Col + 1 Selenite Ingot, 3 Rare Cloth Scrap and 2 Red Core. The Selenite Ingot drops from the Kobold Champion and Little Chemchin.
Does armor change my character's appearance?
Yes — equipped gear shows in the overworld, and later in the game you can recolor pieces (using the Costume Color Change feature for the first time even pops an achievement). See our Transmog guide for appearance options.
Should I buy armor from vendors?
Rarely. Crafted armor from blueprints almost always beats vendor gear at the same point in the game, and Col is better spent on materials and consumables. Check the Smithy first.
