Treasure Chests & Chest Hunting

Most of the crafting content in Echoes of Aincrad is not handed to you by quests — it is sitting in a chest slightly off the objective line. This is the system behind chest hunting: how the Safe Area reveal works, how to use waypoint flares and the Analyze skill, which chests are gated and by what — and the loadout that stops you walking away from loot you can already see on the map.

The Map Is the Checklist

Touching a region's Safe Area pins every fixed chest, Ark and Seal to your map — chest hunting is a routing problem, not a search problem.

The Four Kinds of Chest

"Where are all the chests" is really four different questions, because the game gates them four different ways. Knowing which class you are looking at tells you whether to open it now, come back with an item, or stop counting entirely.

Fixed Overworld Chests

Marker-revealed

The standard chest. Placed by hand in every open region and pinned to the map the moment you touch that region's Safe Area. They do not move between visits and they are not tied to a specific quest, so anything you walk past today is still there tomorrow.

Barrier-Gated Chests

Needs a consumable

Visible on the map but physically walled off by a chasm, a bramble patch, a rock pile or a Golden Gate. The map marker gives you no warning about which barrier stands in front of it, which is why a full barrier kit lives in your pouch permanently.

Ark & Seal Chests

Boss-gated shortcut

Some chests sit in pockets of the map with no walkable route at all. Defeating the region's Ark guardian opens sealed walls and shortcuts that expose them. Seals you unlock while running a side quest stay open when you come back through on the main line.

Dungeon Chests

Randomised, optional

Chests inside dungeons are generated fresh on each visit rather than fixed to a spot, and none of them are mandatory. Treat a dungeon sweep as a loot roll: consistently profitable, never completable, and always worth the extra chamber before you head for the exit.

The Six-Step Region Sweep

Run this order in every new region and you will finish quests with the chests already collected instead of planning a cleanup run you never do.

1

Ride the main road first

Every region is threaded by major roads that reach even its far corners. Chests, landmarks and sealed areas are rarely far from one. Sprinting the road network is a faster survey than picking a compass direction and hoping.

2

Touch the Safe Area before anything else

The Safe Area is the switch that turns the region readable — reaching it drops map markers for Treasure Chests, Arks and Seals across the whole zone. Do this before you start the objective, not after, or you will backtrack the same ground twice.

3

Run Analyze on the way there

An early partner unlocks a skill called Analyze. Left active, it flags treasure before the Safe Area reveal, which covers the one stretch of every region where the map is still blank. There is no cost to leaving it on permanently.

4

Plant waypoint flares in batches

Placing a waypoint on the map drops a brightly coloured flare in the world. You can plant several at once and each gets its own colour, so mark every chest marker in the region and then run the colours off one by one instead of re-opening the map at every junction.

5

Clear the Ark before the objective

Ark guardians hit harder than field mobs but they open the walls and shortcuts that expose the chests you cannot otherwise path to. Fighting the Ark first means one sweep instead of a sweep plus a return trip.

6

Take every detour that looks pointless

Blueprint manuals cluster in optional side pockets and behind shortcuts, not along the objective line. If you follow the marker in a straight line you will finish the quest and leave most of its crafting content on the floor.

Pouch Loadout for a Chest Run

Your Item Pouch is small — roughly ten consumable slots to start — so the loadout is a real decision, not a formality. Investing in Intelligence raises the ceiling, with the 30-point milestone granting an extra carry slot. Chest hunting wants the barrier kit prioritised over raw combat consumables.

AllocationWhat to CarryWhy It Earns the Slot
Barrier kit (4–5 slots)Blink Talisman, Flame Stone or Flame Mine, Bomb Stone or Mine, Luminous TalismanThis is the chest-access kit. One item per barrier type is enough — Flame Stone and Flame Mine do the same job, as do Bomb Stone and Mine — but arriving without one of the four means walking away from a chest you can already see.
Golden access (1 slot)Gold CrystalOpens Golden Gates. Crystals themselves come out of treasure chests rather than quest rewards, and the gate consumes one on use, so carry a spare only when you intend to fight what is behind it.
Sustain (2–3 slots)Great Healing Potion, Great SP Potion, Healing Crystal chargesHealing Crystals are finite per quest. Potions are what let you keep exploring after the objective is done instead of warping home with half the region unswept.
Situational (1–2 slots)Antidote, Holy Water, Cleansing CrystalPoison and Paralysis are the two ailments most likely to kill a chest run rather than a boss fight, because they land while you are mid-detour with no partner cover.

Refill in one action: open the Start Quest screen at the Main Terminal and let it auto-restock the pouch from your storage Chest. It can only replace items you already own copies of, so buy or craft in bulk on town trips. Craft costs and shop prices for every barrier item are on the barriers guide.

Worked Example: A Dungeon Chamber Sweep

Teardrop Cave's Upper Chamber, entered during the Dawning Fear main quest, is the clearest picture of what a full sweep pays. Six chests across four sub-chambers, two of them barrier-gated — and the quest only asks you to find the exit.

ChestAccessContents
Chest 1OpenSP Potion ×1, Healing Potion ×1, Holy Water ×1, Annealed Dagger ×1
Chest 2OpenFrost Stone ×1, Healing Potion ×1, Wild Edge ×1, Spark Talisman ×1
Chest 3Bomb Stone or MineBronze Axe ×1, Numbing Mine ×1, Spark Talisman ×1, Bond Crystal ×1
Chest 4OpenPoison Mine ×1, Mine ×1, Bronze Sword ×1
Chest 5Flame Stone or Flame MinePoison Mine ×1, Spirit Crystal ×1, Steel Hammer ×1, Bomb Stone ×1, Dust Devil ×1, Taurus Axe ×1
Chest 6OpenMine ×1, Antidote ×1, Bronze Sword ×1

Because dungeon placement re-rolls, treat this as a representative haul rather than a fixed map — two whole weapons, a Bond Crystal, a Spirit Crystal and a stack of consumables from one optional chamber. Note also that Teardrop Cave gives you no waypoint until you find the Safe Area yourself, which makes it the ideal place to leave Analyze running.

What Chests Actually Hold

Chests are not a Col top-up. They are the primary distribution channel for two things you cannot farm off enemies — blueprints and Gold Crystals.

Crafting Manuals & Blueprints

The single best reason to sweep. Glove and armour blueprints are overwhelmingly chest-sourced, spread across both floors, and most of them sit in optional areas or behind shortcuts. The Mithril Blade blueprint, for example, is a plain exploration chest in the Southern Poeni Prairie area reached during the Opportunity side quest.

Gold Crystals

Golden Gates need them and the gate consumes one. Crystals come from treasure chests only — they are never handed out as side quest rewards — so your Golden Gate budget is a direct function of how thoroughly you loot. Two sit in the Cliffside Marvel area alone, one behind a chasm.

Weapons & Gear

Chests regularly cough up whole weapons rather than materials: Annealed Daggers, Bronze Swords and Axes early, Steel Hammers and Taurus Axes deeper in. Even when you do not use them, they are Smithy synthesis fodder and Col.

Crystals & Essences

Bond Crystals, Spirit Crystals, Frost Stones and elemental essences are far more common in chests than in drop tables, and several crafting recipes gate on them. This is the quiet reason material farming feels slow when you skip chests.

Talismans, Mines & Consumables

Chests refund the kit you spend opening them. A bomb-gated chest very often contains Bomb Stones, and dungeon chambers hand back potions, mines and talismans in bulk — which is why the barrier kit is cheaper to run than the shop prices suggest.

Chasing a specific blueprint instead of sweeping blind? The blueprint locations guide lists sources per piece, and crafting recipes covers what each manual unlocks.

The Treasure Hunter Trophy: ~392 Chests

Chest hunting stops being optional the moment you chase the Platinum. The bronze Treasure Hunter trophy asks you to obtain items from numerous world treasure chests — and the community count for the fixed overworld chests across both floors sits at roughly 392. Players who rush the main story finish far short of that number and have to plan a dedicated sweep afterwards.

Where the 392 Count Comes From

Achievement hunters tallying every fixed overworld chest — open-field chests, barrier-gated chests, and Ark & Seal chests — report roughly 392 across Floors 1 and 2. Dungeon chests sit outside the count because their placement re-rolls every visit. Sweeping every region's Safe Area marker list, then using the six-step routine above, is how you work through the full set.

Respawn Rules: Mostly No

Community testing shows re-entering a cleared story dungeon does not immediately respawn all its chests. Small basic material chests will sometimes respawn after a set real-world time or after completing a certain number of activities, but high-tier equipment chests and recipe chests stay opened permanently for that playthrough. And Bandai Namco has not yet confirmed whether respawning basic chests count toward the trophy — treat every respawn as a bonus, not a plan.

The Reliable Grind: Procedural Side-Dungeons

The most reliable method for the final few chests is farming the procedural mini-dungeons that populate the lower floors. These side-dungeons randomise their layout and loot placement on every entry, so each run hands you a fresh batch of standard chests. It is tedious, but it guarantees steady progress toward the trophy without starting a new character or a New Game Plus cycle.

The full 52-trophy list with unlock conditions lives on the achievements guide.

What Is Genuinely Missable

  • ◆Chests themselves: mostly safe. Fixed overworld chests stay put and their markers persist once the Safe Area is touched, so a region you left half-swept can be finished later.
  • ◆Quest-gated regions: not safe. Some side quests lock out once you clear a specific main story beat, and the regions they open take their chests with them. This is a real cost in Death Game Mode, where a missed permanent upgrade compounds.
  • ◆Trinkets and Hidden Terminals. Several side quests only unlock after you pick up a Trinket or activate a Hidden Terminal in the field, usually near a Safe Area. No pickup, no quest, no region, no chests.
  • ◆Permanent upgrades hiding in chest routes. Depiction of the Divine, triggered by a glowing fragment beside the stairs at the Mountain Fortress checkpoint, permanently increases your Healing Crystal count. It looks like scenery and it is one detour off the objective line.
  • ◆Dungeon chests: not missable by definition. They re-roll every visit, so nothing is lost by leaving one — but equally there is no completion counter to satisfy.

Six Mistakes That Cost You Chests

MistakeFix
Starting the objective before the Safe AreaThe Safe Area reveal is the whole map. Going for the marker first means exploring blind, then re-crossing the region once the chests finally appear.
Travelling without the full barrier kitOne missing item type is one whole category of chest you cannot open. Auto-restock at the Main Terminal before every quest so the kit refills from storage.
Skipping side questsSide quests open regions, and regions contain chests. They also unlock Seals that stay open when the main quest routes you back through the same map later.
Ignoring Trinkets and Hidden TerminalsSome side quests only appear after you pick up a Trinket or activate a Hidden Terminal out in the field. Miss the pickup and you never see the quest — or its region's chests.
Farming 100% dungeon chestsDungeon chest placement re-rolls each visit and none are mandatory. Sweep the chamber you are in, then move on; there is no completion list to chase.
Leaving Analyze offIt costs nothing to keep running and it is the only way to spot treasure in the stretch between entering a region and reaching its Safe Area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you find all treasure chests in Echoes of Aincrad?

Reach the region's Safe Area first — touching it reveals map markers for every fixed chest, Ark and Seal in that zone. Before you get there, keep a partner's Analyze skill active to surface treasure on unrevealed map. Then plant waypoints, which drop coloured flares in the world, and run the flares one at a time.

Are treasure chests missable?

Fixed overworld chests are not — regions stay open and markers persist, so you can return. What is missable is quest-gated content: side quests can lock out after certain main story beats, taking the regions and chests they unlock with them. Dungeon chests re-roll every visit, so there is nothing fixed to miss.

Why can't I reach a chest I can see on the map?

Either it is behind a barrier that needs a consumable — Blink Talisman for a chasm, Flame Stone or Flame Mine for brambles, Bomb Stone or Mine for a rock pile, Gold Crystal for a Golden Gate — or it is behind a Seal or wall that only opens once you defeat the region's Ark guardian.

Do I need to collect every dungeon chest?

No. Dungeon chests are randomly placed on each visit and are never required for quest or game completion. Sweep the chamber you are standing in because the payout is good, then move on — there is no 100% list.

What is inside treasure chests?

Crafting Manuals and equipment blueprints above all — most glove and armour blueprints come from overworld chests, often in optional pockets. Chests also hold Gold Crystals, which never drop as quest rewards, plus weapons, Bond and Spirit Crystals, essences, potions, talismans and mines.

How many items can I bring into a quest?

The Item Pouch starts at roughly ten consumable slots, and investing in Intelligence raises the ceiling — the 30-point milestone grants an extra carry slot. Use the Start Quest screen at the Main Terminal to auto-restock the pouch from your storage Chest before heading out; it only refills items you already own.
