Four difficulty tiers + optional Death Game Mode — find the combination that fits your playstyle.

Quick Overview

Story

The lowest resistance setting. Tuned for players who want to experience the plot, characters, and floors without grinding through every fight.

Relaxed

Normal

The default balance that most players are expected to pick up first. Combat systems teach at their intended pace.

Balanced

Hard

Tighter timing windows and harder enemy patterns. Expects fluent use of the full combat toolkit.

Challenging

Very Hard

The full challenge tier. Heavier enemy damage, denser groups, and far less forgiveness for sloppy positioning or aggro management.

Extreme

Story

What to Expect

Story-focused: experience the narrative at a relaxed pace. Combat is forgiving — parries and dodges have generous windows, enemy damage is reduced, and resources are plentiful.

Who Is This For?

Ideal for newcomers to action RPGs, younger players, or anyone who prioritizes story over challenge. Also great for a first playthrough to learn the world before tackling higher difficulties.

Tips for This Tier

  • ·Use Story mode to learn the layout of Floor 1 and Floor 2 without pressure
  • ·Experiment with all weapon types — the forgiving combat makes it easy to switch freely
  • ·Focus on exploring side quests and lore rather than min-maxing stats
  • ·Consumables are optional but still helpful for boss fights

Normal

What to Expect

Baseline experience. Enemy damage, health pools, and AI behavior are calibrated to provide a fair but engaging challenge. The combat loop of parry, dodge, and punish works as designed without needing heavy preparation.

Who Is This For?

Recommended for most players, especially those familiar with action RPGs like Ys, Tales of, or the previous SAO games. This is the difficulty the game was primarily balanced around.

Tips for This Tier

  • ·Visit the Smithy before every major boss — weapon upgrades matter on Normal
  • ·Learn to parry consistently — it is the highest-impact skill you can develop
  • ·Build a balanced stat spread early, then specialize once you find your preferred weapon
  • ·Use consumables strategically — healing crystals are a safety net, not a crutch

Hard

What to Expect

Engaged challenge for experienced players. Parry and dodge windows are tighter, enemy attack patterns are more punishing, and resource management becomes critical. Healing crystals shift from convenience to necessity.

Who Is This For?

Perfect for action RPG veterans who want the game to demand their attention. If you have completed Souls-like titles or previous SAO games on higher difficulties, Hard is your starting point.

Tips for This Tier

  • ·Always upgrade your weapon to the current cap before boss fights
  • ·Maintain at least 5 healing crystals in your inventory at all times
  • ·Use Switch Mode with your partner to create safe windows for healing and repositioning
  • ·Learn boss tells thoroughly — one mistimed dodge can cost half your HP bar
  • ·Consider a shield for blocking attacks you cannot reliably parry

Very Hard

What to Expect

Maximum base difficulty without permadeath. Enemies hit extremely hard, groups are larger, and every encounter demands full attention. Aggro management, stamina discipline, and consumable economy are mandatory skills.

Who Is This For?

For hardcore veterans who want the toughest possible experience without permadeath risks. Recommended for second playthroughs or players deeply familiar with the combat system from the demo.

Tips for This Tier

  • ·Max out weapon upgrades before every major milestone — under-gearing is not viable
  • ·Stock 10+ healing crystals and carry status cures for every elemental type
  • ·Use both Free Mode and Switch Mode strategically mid-fight — never leave your partner on auto
  • ·Parrying is essential, not optional — master it on Normal difficulty first
  • ·Aggro management is critical: pulling multiple enemies will likely result in death
  • ·Consider pairing Very Hard with Death Game Mode only if you are prepared to lose runs

Stacking With Death Game Mode

Death Game Mode is a separate toggle — not a difficulty tier. It can be activated on any of the four base settings, and it adds permanent save deletion on death. This creates a wide range of hardcore experiences:

Base DifficultyWith Death Game Mode
StoryRelaxed enemy pressure paired with permanent death stakes for a narrative-focused hardcore run
NormalStandard balance turned into a full hardcore run; a common pick for first death-game attempts
HardTight timing and harder patterns combined with permanent consequences for failed runs
Very HardThe full stacked experience: the hardest base tier layered with the death-game ruleset

By default, Death Game Mode unlocks after clearing the main story. The Deluxe and Ultimate editions grant access from the start. Death Game Mode lives on its own save slot, separate from normal playthroughs.

Can You Change Difficulty Mid-Game?

Yes — with one restriction. You can freely switch between the four difficulty tiers from any town menu, as long as you are not inside an active quest. The difficulty setting is found alongside the quest board, shop, and gear management screens, making it part of your pre-run preparation routine.

Once a quest begins, you are locked into the current difficulty until you return to town. This prevents using difficulty changes as a mid-fight escape hatch while still giving you full freedom between expeditions.

A common strategy is to start on Normal, then raise or lower the challenge per-region as your comfort with the combat system grows. The freedom to switch means you never need to restart the game to find the right difficulty — just adjust at the next town visit.

Recommended Progression Path

First Playthrough

Normal is the recommended starting point. It provides the intended balance — combat is engaging without being punishing. If you find yourself struggling with a particular boss or area, drop to Story for that section, then raise back to Normal afterward.

Second Playthrough

Hard or Very Hard with Death Game Mode active. By this point you know the combat system, boss patterns, and world layout. The permadeath layer adds real stakes that transform routine encounters into tense survival situations.

New to Action RPGs

Start on Story. The reduced pressure lets you learn parry timing, stamina management, and partner synergy without being punished for mistakes. You can raise the difficulty at any town once the combat systems click.

Veteran / Souls-like Players

Jump straight to Hard or Very Hard. The tighter parry windows and punishing enemy patterns will match your expectation of difficulty. Consider enabling Death Game Mode from the start if you purchased Deluxe or Ultimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch between difficulties mid-quest?

No. Difficulty changes can only be made while in a town, not during an active quest. This prevents using difficulty reduction as a mid-fight escape mechanic.

Does higher difficulty give better rewards?

Bandai Namco has not confirmed explicit reward scaling by difficulty. However, higher tiers encourage deeper exploration of the combat system and resource management, which naturally leads to better-prepared characters.

Is there an achievement or trophy for completing the game on Very Hard?

Bandai Namco has not released the full achievement list. Higher difficulty completions are not confirmed as trophy requirements. The platinum trophy list is expected closer to launch.

Does Death Game Mode lock me into one difficulty?

No. Death Game Mode is independent of the base difficulty. You can switch between Story, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard freely while Death Game Mode is active. Only the permadeath consequence stays constant.

What difficulty was the demo?

The demo restricts play to Story and Normal tiers. Hard and Very Hard, along with Death Game Mode, are exclusive to the full retail release launching July 9, 2026.
