Before Any Boss Fight
Once a boss battle begins, you cannot retreat. Follow this checklist at the Town of Beginnings before each encounter:
- 1.Refill Healing Crystals at a Safety Area. Stock healing potions and status cures.
- 2.Visit the Smithy — upgrade your weapon, fuse materials, and apply EX-Mods.
- 3.Spend Growth Points — raise stats that match your weapon's scaling.
- 4.Choose the right partner for the fight ahead.
- 5.Accept the quest from the Main Terminal and head out.
Sentry Golem
The first major boss of the prologue. A slow but powerful construct that serves as your introduction to proper boss combat in Echoes of Aincrad.
Attack Patterns
- ·Stomp — repeatable close-range attack while you are nearby
- ·Ground Sweep — wide-radius attack that can stagger you
Strategy
- 1.Stay behind the Sentry Golem at all times — its attacks are all forward-facing
- 2.Use charged heavy attacks from behind for maximum damage
- 3.Parry the ground sweep and follow up with Iori's charged thrust attack
- 4.Do not panic-dodge — the boss is slow, so timed sidesteps are more stamina-efficient
Preparation
Practice parrying on fodder enemies before this fight. The Sentry Golem is forgiving but teaches fundamentals.
Illfang the Kobold Lord
The hardest boss in the prologue and the first true skill check. Three phases with summons and a unique finisher mechanic.
Attack Patterns
- ·360° Ground Sweep — covers full rotation, punishable after the swing
- ·Charged Roar — forces you and Iori into a blocking stance, also summons fodder enemies
Strategy
- 1.Phase 1-2: Deplete HP while managing summoned adds — clear them quickly to avoid being overwhelmed
- 2.Phase 3 (final): Illfang stops summoning adds but attacks more aggressively
- 3.Finisher mechanic: After depleting Illfang's HP bar, it regenerates unless you perform a finisher
- 4.Stand in front of or beside Illfang and press the heavy attack button to execute a finisher
- 5.The finisher must be performed three times to permanently defeat Illfang
- 6.Save SP and Sword Skills for Phase 3 — the final phase demands maximum burst damage
Preparation
Fully upgrade your weapon at the Smithy before this fight. Stock at least 5 Healing Crystals. Consider using Switch Mode to split aggro during add phases.
Snowcap Boar
A straightforward beast encounter that serves as a breather after Illfang. Tests your ability to read charge patterns.
Attack Patterns
- ·Charge — linear rush attack, telegraphed by the boar lowering its head
- ·Tusk Swipe — close-range melee swing
Strategy
- 1.Side-step the charge attack — the boar over-commits and leaves a large punish window
- 2.Attack from the side, not head-on — the front is armored
- 3.Use Sword Skills during the punish window for maximum damage
- 4.This is a good fight to practice parry timing on a moving target
Preparation
No special preparation needed. A standard weapon upgrade is sufficient.
Glenspore Grizzly (First Fight)
A fierce ursine boss encountered during the thief-route quest setup. The first of two encounters with this enemy type.
Attack Patterns
- ·Claw Swipe — fast horizontal swipe, can be chained twice
- ·Lunge — short-range forward rush with knockback
- ·Roar — short stun effect in close range
Strategy
- 1.This fight is about positioning — stay at medium range to bait the lunge
- 2.After the lunge whiffs, close in for 2-3 quick attacks then back off
- 3.Do not get cornered — the Grizzly's claw combo can stunlock you
- 4.Use Iori in Switch Mode to create opening windows
Preparation
Equip a shield if possible. The claw swipe can be blocked reliably.
Dire Stife Wolf
A fast, aggressive wolf boss that rewards aggressive play and punishes hesitation.
Attack Patterns
- ·Pouncing Bite — long-range leap attack, can be sidestepped
- ·Howl — buffs the wolf's attack speed temporarily
- ·Triple Snap — three quick bites in succession
Strategy
- 1.Unlike previous bosses, the Dire Stife Wolf rewards aggression — stay close and pressure it
- 2.Dodge toward the wolf during its pounce to end up behind it
- 3.During the Howl animation, this is your safest damage window — use Sword Skills freely
- 4.The Triple Snap can be parried; the third hit has the longest recovery
Preparation
Consider a faster weapon (Rapier or Dagger) for this fight to match the wolf's speed.
Glenspore Grizzly (Second Fight)
The second encounter with the Glenspore Grizzly, now with enhanced stats and new attack patterns.
Attack Patterns
- ·All first-fight attacks, plus:
- ·Enraged Charge — longer-range, faster version of the lunge
- ·Double Swipe — two claw swipes in quick succession
Strategy
- 1.This version is faster and hits harder — defensive play is required
- 2.Use the same bait-and-punish strategy as the first fight, but with tighter windows
- 3.If you struggled with the first Grizzly, return to the Town of Beginnings and upgrade your gear
- 4.Healing Crystals are essential — do not enter this fight with fewer than 3
Preparation
Mandatory Smithy visit before this fight. Upgrade weapon to max demo level. Stock 5+ Healing Crystals.
Wrathful Shreman
The final boss of the prologue. A chaotic multi-phase encounter that tests everything you have learned.
Attack Patterns
- ·Sonic Scream — wide-area damage, must be blocked or dodged
- ·Claw Barrage — rapid multi-hit close-range combo
- ·Phase 2 Enrage — increased attack speed and new AoE patterns
Strategy
- 1.Phase 1: Learn the tells — Sonic Scream is preceded by a visible wind-up
- 2.Phase 2 (Enrage): The boss becomes significantly faster. Switch to defensive tactics
- 3.Use Free Mode with Iori in Phase 1 to burn through the first health bar quickly
- 4.Switch to Switch Mode in Phase 2 so Iori tanks while you heal
- 5.Save your most powerful Sword Skills for Phase 2's opening
- 6.If your HP drops below 30%, disengage and heal immediately — the enrage combo can one-shot
Preparation
Max-level weapon upgrade. Full Healing Crystal stock (10+). All Growth Points spent. This is the final exam of the prologue — over-prepare.
Core Combat Systems
Stamina & SP
Stamina covers dodging, blocking, and normal attacks. SP fuels Sword Skills. Never drain either completely — keep a reserve for emergency dodges and burst windows.
Switch & Free Mode
Switch Mode splits aggro so you can heal or reposition. Free Mode stacks damage on a single target. Toggle mid-fight based on the situation.
Parry & Reversal
Parrying consumes no stamina and opens enemies to Reversal Slash counters. Practice on the fodder enemies between bosses — it is the highest-impact skill you can learn.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave a boss room once the fight starts?
No. Once you cross the boss door, you are committed. This is why the preparation checklist before each encounter is critical — there is no backing out.
What happens if I die to a prologue boss?
On Normal difficulty (demo), you respawn at the last checkpoint with partial resource loss. In Death Game Mode (full game), death means save deletion. The demo does not include Death Game Mode.
Which prologue boss is the hardest?
Illfang the Kobold Lord is widely considered the hardest encounter in the prologue. His three phases, summons, and finisher mechanic make him a significant skill gate for new players.
