Status Ailments Guide
Every debuff in Echoes of Aincrad — Burning, Poisoned, Numbed, Dazed, Fatigued, Blinded, and the run-ending Instant Death ailment. This guide covers which enemies inflict each one, how to counter them, and how to turn the same ailments into your best boss-killing tools.

Ailments are a two-way system: everything that can cripple you can also be weaponized against Aincrad's toughest bosses.
Every Status Ailment Explained
Seven ailments matter in combat. Each entry lists who inflicts it, and the counter that keeps it from costing you a fight — or a save.
Burning
Damage over timeSources: Fire attacks, brambles, enemy flame breath; you inflict it with Flame Stones / Flame Mines and burn-stacking weapons
Counter: Keep moving and heal through the ticks; don't stand in fire zones. Offensively, Burning is one of the best boss DPS boosts — stack it early in the fight.
Poisoned
HP drainSources: Venomous enemies and traps; you inflict it with Poisoned Stones / Poisoned Mines
Counter: Top up HP between hits and finish fights fast. Offensively, Poison keeps ticking while you play safe — ideal for high-HP bosses that resist Burning.
Numbed / Stunned
Loss of controlSources: Electric attacks and shock traps; you inflict it with Numbing Mines (place directly on the target)
Counter: Build stamina discipline so you're never caught mid-animation. Offensively, a Numbing Mine is a free damage window on almost any enemy — even bosses.
Dazed
Stagger stateSources: Heavy blunt impacts; certain maces (like the Canary Tamer) inflict Daze and gain bonus damage against dazed targets
Counter: Dodge heavy slam attacks rather than blocking them. Offensively, Daze builds into stun-lock loops — mace users can chain control and SP recovery off it.
Fatigued
Stamina debuffSources: Blood Wolves and similar pack enemies on the ascent to Floor 3
Counter: Fight conservatively: basic attacks over Sword Skills, short dodges over sprints. Never empty your stamina bar while Fatigued — that's when packs punish you.
Blinded
Vision impairmentSources: Enemies like the Big Rocky Cow; some dark-zone hazards
Counter: Create distance immediately, keep lock-on engaged, and play defensively until it clears. A Luminous Talisman helps in naturally dark areas but won't cure the ailment.
Instant Death
One-hit killSources: Specific late-game boss attacks — most famously the Cursed Shrewman's bouncing red orbs (phase 2)
Counter: There is no mitigating this one: dodge it, period. Learn the visual tell (glowing red orbs), keep your camera wide, and never greed for one more hit while they're bouncing.
Spotlight: The Instant Death Ailment
Unlike every other debuff, Instant Death ignores your HP bar entirely. The most infamous source is the Cursed Shrewman in Que's Sanctuary: once it enters its second phase, it releases bouncing red orbs that kill on contact. More late-game encounters reuse the same mechanic with the same visual language — glowing red projectiles.
- ◆Read the tell: red orbs bounce in arcs — track the bounce pattern instead of panicking away from the boss.
- ◆Widen your camera: most Instant Death hits come from orbs that left the screen and bounced back.
- ◆Death Game Mode: this single mechanic has ended more permadeath runs than any boss enrage — treat phase 2 as a no-greed zone.
Weaponizing Ailments: Your Offensive Kit
The same status system is your strongest consumable toolkit. These items inflict ailments on enemies — stock them before every Ark boss.
| Item | Inflicts | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Flame Stone / Flame Mine | Burning | Throw at bosses at fight start for free damage over time; also burns bramble barriers in the world. |
| Poisoned Stone / Poisoned Mine | Poisoned | The go-to for burn-immune bosses like the Red Mordred. Reapply when the tick damage stops. |
| Numbing Mine | Numbed (stun) | Place directly on an enemy or boss for a guaranteed damage window. High versions stun longer. |
| Bomb Stone / Bomb Mine | Stagger / knockdown | Crowd control for packs; also clears rock-pile barriers. Chain with a Sword Skill while enemies are down. |
| Spark Talisman | Shock burst | Emergency crowd opener from the Ver. 1.0.3 Support Item Set — use it when surrounded. |
Boss immunities exist: the Red Mordred at the Sacred Mountain Temple resists Burning but takes full Poison and Numbing damage. Always carry two ailment types so one immunity never blanks your whole kit.
Ailment Rules for Death Game Mode
In permadeath, ailments aren't an inconvenience — they're the leading cause of deleted saves. Five rules keep your run alive.
- ◆Memorize Instant Death tells before attempting a boss — one red orb ends the entire save.
- ◆Carry at least two ailment types into every Ark so a single boss immunity doesn't waste your loadout.
- ◆Never fight Fatigued with an empty stamina bar — stunned + permadeath is how most wolf-pack runs end.
- ◆Use Numbing Mines proactively on dangerous bosses: a guaranteed stun window is worth more than any DPS consumable in permadeath.
- ◆If Blinded triggers mid-boss, disengage completely. Surviving 10 seconds costs nothing; guessing wrong costs the run.
Master the Whole Combat System
Ailments are one layer — stamina, parries, Sword Skills, and consumables complete the picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cure a status ailment instantly?
Most ailments run on a timer and clear on their own — your job is surviving the duration. Healing items counteract the HP loss from Burning and Poison, while control effects like Numbed and Dazed must simply be avoided through positioning and stamina discipline.
Which ailment is best against bosses?
Numbing Mines give a guaranteed stun window on almost everything, making them the highest-value single item. For sustained damage, Burning and Poison are interchangeable — carry both, because some bosses (like the Red Mordred) are immune to one but not the other.
Do weapon MODs apply ailments automatically?
Some Unique MODs do — burn-stacking two-handers like the Abyss Bringer apply Burning on hit and recover SP from burning enemies, while maces like the Canary Tamer inflict Daze and gain bonus damage on affected targets. Check the MOD text on every drop before dismantling.
Where do I get ailment items?
Merchants stock the basic Stones and Mines, crafting produces stronger versions, and the Ver. 1.0.3 Support Item Set (claimed from the Inn chest after "Iori's Request") includes High Bomb Stones, High Flame Stones, and High Numbing Mines to start your stockpile.
