Echoes of Aincrad — Transmog & Costume Guide

Aincrad lets you keep a favorite look without compromising your build. The Costume function reskins and recolors your gear while your real stats stay exactly where the Smithy put them. Here is how to unlock it, how the two tabs differ, and the one cosmetic rule that is permanent.

Look Without Compromise

Transmog copies appearance only — you scale the weapon's real stats at the Smithy while keeping the skin you love.

What the Costume / Transmog System Does

The Costume function is a cosmetic transmog system. It lets your equipment adopt the appearance of other pieces of gear and lets you recolor individual items — all without altering the underlying values. In short: you scale your weapon's real stats at the Smithy, then keep whatever look you want on top. A set costume stays active even after you equip different gear, so your style survives every upgrade.

It is unlocked as the final reward of the priority side quest "One Chance," given by a merchant in the Town of Beginnings after the main quest "Rising Fear."

How to Unlock the Costume Function

1Progress the story until you complete the main quest “Rising Fear.” This opens the post-quest side content in the Town of Beginnings.
2Find the merchant marked on your map — the “One Chance” side quest appears as a purple question mark (priority side quest) near the item dealer.
3Run the merchant’s errand (gather the supplies she needs for her business idea). Pack your most useful traversal items before the trip.
4Turn the quest in. The Costume function is granted as the final reward and shows up in your Chest under “Equipment / Costume.”

Equipment Tab vs Costume Tab

Equipment Tab

Real gear & stats

Re-equip weapons and armor as usual and adjust the stats they provide. This is the normal management screen — nothing here is cosmetic-only.

Costume Tab

Purely cosmetic

Choose what your equipment looks like without changing its actual values, and recolor individual pieces to taste. A set costume stays active even if you later equip other gear.

Recoloring and the One Permanent Rule

  • Transmog is look-only — keep upgrading the real item at the Smithy; the skin follows.
  • Recolor pieces in the Costume tab to match a theme without sacrificing stat builds.
  • Remove a costume to reveal the gear you actually have equipped.
  • The avatar editor (face, hair, body, voice) is one-time only — transmog covers gear, not your character.

Note the distinction: the avatar editor that sets your character's face, hair, body, and voice unlocks once after the Prologue and cannot be reopened. Transmog is a separate, repeatable system that only touches gear appearance and color.

Looks Good, Plays Better

Transmog handles appearance — the Smithy handles the numbers. Know both, and your hero looks like a legend while fighting like one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Costume function available from the start?

No. It is locked until you complete the side quest "One Chance" in the Town of Beginnings, which itself opens after the main quest "Rising Fear."

Will recoloring my gear weaken it?

Never. The Costume tab is cosmetic-only. Your real stats, damage, and defenses are set by the equipment you equip and the upgrades you apply at the Smithy.

Where do I open the Costume menu?

Open your Chest and select the "Equipment / Costume" section. The Costume tab sits alongside the normal Equipment tab once the function is unlocked.

Can I reskin a weapon to look like a stronger one?

Yes. Transmog applies appearance only, so you can keep a beloved skin on an upgraded item — the look is independent of the item's actual power.
