Character Creation — A First for SAO Games
For the first time in a mainline Sword Art Online game, Echoes of Aincrad lets you create your own original hero rather than playing solely as Kirito. Your created avatar takes the role of one of the 10,000 players trapped inside the floating castle of Aincrad, living an original story that runs alongside the events SAO fans already know. Character creation is available in the full release launching July 9, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and July 10 on PC via Steam. If you have played the demo, you would have noticed that the character creator is locked — you play as a preset beta avatar instead. This is an intentional limitation; the full game begins with the character creator and lets you design your hero from scratch.
Body Types & Appearance Customization
Echoes of Aincrad offers a solid range of visual customization options at launch. You can choose from multiple body types — at minimum two (male and female body shapes based on skeletal scaling), though some sources suggest additional build options may be available. Appearance sliders cover facial structure, hair style and colour, eye shape and colour, skin tone, and voice. The game also includes name entry for your character, letting you define your identity within the world. While the customization depth is comparable to recent SAO titles — roughly in line with what players saw in Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris — it does not rival dedicated character creators like those in the Souls series or Dragon's Dogma 2. The focus is on creating a recognizable hero that fits the anime-style aesthetic rather than photorealistic granularity.
Pro tip: Your character's appearance is purely cosmetic — no build or body type affects gameplay stats. Choose whatever look feels right for your playthrough.
Stat System Overview — Seven Core Attributes
After designing your avatar's appearance, you allocate Growth Points into seven core attributes. The stat system forms the foundation of your build and directly affects how your chosen weapon performs in combat. The seven attributes are: Strength (attack & defense, heavy weapons), Dexterity (Sword Skill damage and parry windows), Agility (attack/sprint speed and dodge), Intelligence (status resist, EXP/Col gain, item slots), Vitality (Max HP and Healing Crystal power), Endurance (Max Stamina and recovery), and Mind (Max SP and SP economy). Note there is no Luck stat. Each level-up grants Growth Points to distribute freely, and gear bonuses can supplement your chosen allocation. There is no respeccing confirmed yet for the early game, so your initial stat choices carry weight through the opening floors.

Your stat allocation directly affects weapon performance — plan your build before committing points.
Stat Allocation Strategy by Weapon & Playstyle
Your stat allocation should align with your chosen weapon type and preferred combat approach. Heavy weapons like Greatsword, Battle Axe, and Mace scale primarily with Strength — prioritize Strength first, then Vitality and Endurance for survivability. Fast weapons like Dagger, Rapier, and Bow scale with Agility — prioritise Agility first, then Mind for SP sustain. Swords and Greatswords reward Dexterity for Sword Skill damage and parry windows. Balanced weapons like One-Handed Sword and Spear benefit from a mix — a 2:1 Strength-to-Dexterity or Dexterity-to-Strength ratio works well depending on your skill usage. For beginners, a balanced spread with an emphasis on Vitality and Endurance (2 Str:1 Dex:2 VIT:2 END) provides the most forgiving experience. For Death Game Mode, where one death deletes your save, prioritize Vitality and Endurance heavily until you are comfortable with enemy patterns.
Pro tip: If you are planning to experiment with multiple weapon types, avoid hyper-specializing early. Keep Strength and Dexterity within 3-4 points of each other for the first 10 levels so you can swap weapons freely.
Partner Synergy — Complementing Your Stats
Your AI partner's stats and support skills can fill gaps in your build. If you invest heavily in Strength and neglect Dexterity, a partner with offensive support skills can compensate for lower sword-skill damage. If you build glass-cannon with high offense but low Endurance, a partner with healing or defensive skills provides essential survivability. The partner system lets you choose one companion per quest, each with unique support skills and a combination skill. Iori — the beta tester you meet early in the story — is a flexible all-rounder that works well with most builds. As more partners are introduced through the campaign, their unique skill sets will create interesting synergies with specific stat allocations.
Demo vs Full Release — What Changes at Launch
The demo (released June 16, 2026) locks character creation — you play as a preset beta avatar with a fixed appearance and stat spread. The demo also caps level at 15, limits weapon proficiency to 3, and restricts partner options to Iori only. At full launch on July 9, character creation becomes fully available, level cap increases progressively through the campaign, all six weapon types unlock their full skill trees, and additional partners become recruitable. RPG Site noted that the demo's lack of avatar customization generated discussion among players — Bandai Namco has clarified this is purely a demo limitation and the full game will include the full character creator from the start.
Can You Change Your Appearance Later?
Your character's body, face, hair, and voice are locked by the one-time avatar editor that unlocks after the Prologue (after the Violet Fencer II stretch) and cannot be reopened — so treat that editor as a one-shot decision and plan your look carefully. Gear appearance is a different story: the Costume function (transmog) lets you reskin and recolor your equipment whenever you like, purely cosmetically, without touching its real stats. See our Transmog & Costume Guide for how to unlock it. Stat respec is still unconfirmed, so your initial stat choices continue to carry weight through the early floors.
