Echoes of Aincrad — Legendary Weapons

The Second Floor hides a chain of Sanctuaries, each sealing an ancient weapon behind an Ark boss. This guide maps every legendary weapon, the exact route to reach it, which one the rival swordsman Arne steals from you, and how to make sure the ones you do claim actually carry your climb.

Sanctuary Rewards

Legendary weapons are story-gated: each Sanctuary guards one, and one of them is taken from you before you can claim it.

Every Legendary Weapon

Legendary One-Handed Sword

Obtainable

Sanctuary: First Sanctuary·Quest: Legend of the High Elves

Route: Talk to the Elven Guard → clear the dungeon → defeat the Sentry Golem → reach the Relic Hall → defeat the Tyrant Golem → take the sword.

Claiming this sword reveals the location of the second Sanctuary. Afterward, the boy Pucci appears to ask about the blade and share High Elf lore.

Legendary Weapon (Que's Sanctuary)

Obtainable

Sanctuary: Second Sanctuary — Que's Sanctuary·Quest: Trees in the Sand → Que's Sanctuary

Route: Search for the Second Sanctuary → defeat the Cursed Shrewman → keep searching → defeat the Troll Ark Shaman → recover the legendary weapon.

Reached after the 'Trees in the Sand' quest points you to Que's Sanctuary. Activate the Warp Terminal inside so you can fast-travel back for postgame Augite runs.

Legendary Greatsword

Stolen by Arne (missable)

Sanctuary: Cati's Sanctuary·Quest: Cati's Sanctuary

Route: Search for Cal → defeat the Defender Golem (twice) → follow Arne → defeat the Grand Orbweaver → approach Arne.

Scripted loss: Arne has already claimed the greatsword and will not show it to Pucci. Because he took it, the party loses the trail to the fourth Sanctuary, setting up 'The Final Trial.'

The Sanctuary Chain

1

First Sanctuary

Legend of the High Elves — Sentry Golem then Tyrant Golem in the Relic Hall. Rewards the Legendary One-Handed Sword.

2

Que's Sanctuary

Trees in the Sand → Que's Sanctuary — Cursed Shrewman then Troll Ark Shaman. Rewards a legendary weapon.

3

Cati's Sanctuary

Cati's Sanctuary — Defender Golem then Grand Orbweaver. Arne steals the legendary greatsword here.

4

The Final Trial

Clear three Arks near the Sacred Mountain Temple, then face the Red Mordred — one of the hardest fights in the game.

How to Claim a Legendary Weapon

Every legendary weapon follows the same pattern: a story quest points you at a Sanctuary, you fight through a dungeon and two bosses, and the ancient weapon waits past the final guardian. The catch is preparation and timing — Sanctuaries behave like Arks, so you commit to the boss room with whatever you brought.

1Reach the Second Floor and progress the main story to the Sanctuary chain. Legendary weapons are gated behind main quests, not open exploration — you cannot grab them early.
2Enter the Sanctuary and treat it like an Ark: no shop, no retreat once you commit to the boss room. Stock Healing Crystals, SP potions, and status items before you go in.
3Clear the Sanctuary's dungeon section and defeat both bosses (each Sanctuary has a mid boss and a guardian). The legendary weapon sits deeper in, past the final guardian.
4Take the weapon, then head straight to the Smithy. Upgrade and apply EX-Mods immediately — an un-upgraded legendary weapon is quickly outscaled by a fully-modded standard weapon.

Arne — The Weapon Thief

Arne is a white-haired swordsman who shadows your Sanctuary run. At Cati's Sanctuary, after you clear the Defender Golem and Grand Orbweaver, you follow him only to learn he has already taken the legendary greatsword — and refuses to show it to Pucci. This is a scripted loss you cannot prevent, and it costs the party the trail to the fourth Sanctuary, driving the story into The Final Trial.

Don't burn resources racing Arne to the greatsword — you will not beat the cutscene. Save your consumables for the Grand Orbweaver and the Red Mordred that follows in The Final Trial.

Legendary Weapon Tips

  • Legendary weapons are one-handed-sword and greatsword class — pick a compatible main so the reward slots straight into your build.
  • Upgrade a legendary weapon at the Smithy the moment you get it; its base stats age fast without materials poured in.
  • The greatsword at Cati's Sanctuary is a guaranteed story loss to Arne — don't waste time trying to reach it before him.
  • For the strongest craftable gear, farm Ark bosses summoned with Gold Crystals, then upgrade the drop right away.
  • Keep a Gold Crystal in your pouch — sealed Sanctuary side rooms and Golden Gates often hide upgrade materials for these weapons.

Build Around Your Legendary Weapon

A legendary weapon is only as good as the build and upgrades behind it. Pair it with the right stats, Smithy path, and Sanctuary strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the greatsword Arne takes later?

Not at Cati's Sanctuary — his theft is a fixed story beat. The party's pursuit of Arne and the missing ancient weapons is what drives the rest of the campaign, so treat it as narrative, not a mistake on your part.

Do legendary weapons scale with my level?

They have strong base stats but rely on Smithy upgrades and EX-Mods to stay ahead. Pour materials into one as soon as you claim it, or a fully-modded standard weapon will out-damage it within a floor.

Are legendary weapons the same as Ark boss weapons?

No. Legendary (ancient) weapons are story rewards inside Sanctuaries. The best craftable weapons come from Ark bosses summoned with Gold Crystals — a separate farming loop worth chasing for endgame builds.

Which weapon type should I main for legendary rewards?

The confirmed legendary weapons are a one-handed sword and a greatsword. If you want to use the reward directly, mains built around those classes benefit most — but any build gains value from the materials and lore the Sanctuary chain unlocks.
